Q Manivannan is a lead candidate for the Greens on the Lothian list in the Scottish Parliamentary elections, May 2026.
We are an island of friends, not strangers. Our communities are thicker than hate.
As a queer Tamil immigrant, I am standing to be an MSP to bring a politics of care and compassion to Holyrood, to fight for the radical change our working-class and marginalised communities need.
There is a desire for a kinder politics across Scotland. We are struggling with the skyrocketing cost of living, worried about nature and climate emergencies, rising intolerance and hate in our communities, and frustrated by the lack of transformative action we need to make Scotland the fairer country we all want it to be. Now more than ever, our care for struggling people is not at odds with our care for the economy or environment – they’re one and the same.
So, I am passionate about more caring politics rooted in the working class, the queer, and the solidary; politics that includes, that listens to people. Building on my experience as a community organiser, teacher, and policy expert, having worked with the United Nations, trade unions, Scottish human rights groups, and voluntary organisations to improve disability inclusion, create accessible and feminist cities, and improve human rights, I know what it means to stand up for justice and make change happen.
I will introduce a brave, new energy to Holyrood – a politics which moves away from disagreement, distrust and suspicion and towards trust and collaboration. I want to continue standing unwaveringly for solidarity for oppressed communities – whether its immigrants or asylum-seekers in Edinburgh, Scottish diaspora communities abroad, or suffering Palestinians. Foremost, I would be the voice for my constituents across Edinburgh and Lothians East, speaking up for our local communities and fighting for the change we want and need.
The Scottish Greens have achieved so much in parliament: winning historic rent control legislation; ending peak rail fares; delivering free bus travel to under 25s and asylum seekers; bringing the total annual spend on climate and nature up to £4.9 billion; ending arms trade to Israel, and so much more.
Now, we have the chance to elect our highest ever number of MSPs (including, perhaps, me!) to Holyrood in 2026 and achieve even more progressive change.
Let’s paint the town green.
