Have you ever considered standing to be a Green councillor?
In the run up to our selection process for the 2027 City of Edinburgh Council elections, the Green Councillor Group in Edinburgh are holding a series of workshops to explain more about what it means to be a councillor, and why you should put yourself forward.

Workshops & Support
Topics
We will be covering the following topics:
- The difference a Green councillor can make – highlighting what you can achieve for your community and the city
- A day in the life of a Green councillor – explaining more about the nuts and bolts of the role and how it can fit with other commitments
- What’s on a councillor CV? – highlighting the skills and experiences you can gain as a Councillor
- Wellbeing and safety as an elected member – discussing what support is in place to make the role as accessible and inclusive as possible
Support
In addition, we will be:
- Launching a ‘Candidate Community’ WhatsApp group for general chat and support in the run up to the selection
- Developing FAQ documents which cover the practical questions like pay and place of work, as well as more about the functions of the Council itself
- Offering shadowing and volunteering opportunities with the current councillor group (from January 2026)
Accessibility
We will also be working with the Women’s Network, Rainbow Greens, Greens of Colour and Disabled Greens on separate sessions for marginalised groups. We particularly encourage women, people of colour, disabled people, LGBT+ people, young people and any other groups who have been historically underrepresented to join us to find out more.
You do not need to be a member to join the sessions though you will need to join the Party if you decide to run. The sessions will be held in person and online, starting in October and finishing in February.
